Upgrading to Ubuntu 20.04

Method 1 – Upgrading using GUI

Step 1 – Search for an updater in your system. Then search for new updates once found click on them. Further, click on install now in new updates.

Method 2 – Upgrading Using Command Line

Step 1 – The first step would be to update all the installed packages. For doing that write the following command.

aaronjones@wgs:~$ sudo apt upgrade -y

Step 2 – Once all the updates are installed. It’s time to reboot the system with this command.

aaronjones@wgs:~$ sudo reboot

Step 3 – Once your system comes back on after the reboot. It’s time to remove the unused kernels to get some free space. In order to achieve that use the following command.

aaronjones@wgs:~$ sudo apt --purge autoremove

Step 4 – The next step would be to install the “ update-manager-core”. Write the following code to get it installed.

aaronjones@wgs:~$ sudo apt install update-manager-core -y

Step 5 – To check whether Ubuntu version 20.04 is available or not. Use the following command.

aaronjones@wgs:~$ sudo do-release-upgrade

Step 6 – If still, it doesn’t show the new version. You can use this force command.

aaronjones@wgs:~$ sudo do-release-upgrade -d

Step 7 – Now run the upgrade and use “y” or “enter” to confirm the details of the upgrade whenever asked during the upgrade. At last when the upgrade is completed use y to restart the system.

Step 8 – Once the reboot is completed. Open the terminal and write the following command to verify the upgrade.

aaronjones@wgs:~$ cat /etc/lsb-release

Using any of the above two mentioned methods your upgrading of your Ubuntu to version 20.04 is successful.
