Payment Gateways Explained: How to Optimize Online Payments

Customer Places an Order

The process begins when a customer decides to purchase a product or service on a merchant's website or app.

Data Encryption

The payment gateway encrypts the transaction details to ensure that the information passes securely between the customer and the merchant.

Authorization Request

The encrypted data is sent to the payment processor, which then forwards the transaction to the respective card association (e.g., Visa, MasterCard).

Issuing Bank Approval

The card association routes the transaction to the customer's issuing bank for approval.

Response

The issuing bank approves or declines the transaction and sends the response back through the same channels to the payment gateway.

Completion

The payment gateway conveys the response to the merchant, and if approved, the transaction is completed.
